Fighters No. 1

It's this moment, caught between camaraderie and tragedy, that moves us. There's no epic in the composition, no heroic pose: these are young people playing at war, unaware that war doesn't play . One has his fist raised. Another shouts something we can't hear. The one in front seems to be looking directly at us, pale, as if he sensed that the click of the camera would, perhaps, be his last portrait.

Who were they? What did they dream of? Who did they leave behind when they left?
